Giving Through Gift Annuities

We're all familiar with the phrase "it's better to give than to receive". Nothing illustrates this principal better than a charitable gift annuity. Dating back to the Middle Ages, the charitable gift annuity continues to be one of the most simple and flexible gift choices while providing the donor with income and generous tax benefits.

Under the terms of a gift annuity, an irrevocable gift is made with cash or other property (stocks, bonds, retirement fund, etc.). You and/or others, if you desire, then receive fixed payments for life. The payments will continue regardless of how long you and/or other recipients live. And because your gift will be used for charitable purposes, you are entitled to an income tax deduction in the year of your gift. In addition, for a period of time, a portion of each payment may be free of income tax or taxed at capital gains tax rates that are lower than tax rates on other income. In times of lower interest rates, gift annuity payments can be an attractive way to generate more useable income than you now receive from your investments. Gift annuities funded with appreciated assets can also provide significant relief from capital gains tax.

Gift annuities can also do more than enhance your future financial well being. It is also possible for two persons, such as husband and wife, to enjoy payments from a gift annuity. Charitable gift annuities also allow donors to make a charitable gift while helping to meet the long-term financial needs of a loved one such as a parent or child. It's certainly easy to see why the gift annuity is such a popular vehicle of giving. Gifts received by Connie Maxwell from annuities are placed in our endowment program where the principal will forever remain intact, producing a perpetual stream of interest income to provide for the boys and girls placed in our care.
